What are some majors or careers that best match my interests, personality, skills,
and values? What if I haveNO IDEA what I want to major in—or too many ideas? How do I learn more about careers? What career options fit my major? What do I need to do now to make sure I can get a job in my field? How do I get a mentor in career fields that interest me? What internships and jobs match my major and experience?
If you have asked these or similar questions, then a CAREER COUNSELOR can advise you in your search for answers. Career counseling is a process that assists you in understanding your personality, interests, work
values, and skills and learning how these traits connect to career paths. Career counselors
administer and interpret your career assessments, help you explore and research occupations, teach decision-making techniques, and
assist you to develop a career plan.
Career counseling FAQs
To make an individual appointment, call the Career Center at 417-836-5636 or stop by the office in Carrington 309 or Glass
276. Allow 45–60 minutes for an appointment. If you need to leave early, or think
you may be late to the session, please tell the receptionist when you make your appointment.
Appointments and assessments are FREE to Missouri State University students and alumni.
Face-to-face appointments are preferable, but if you do not live in the area, we
can accommodate your needs. If you need to re-schedule your appointment, please contact
the Career Center as soon as possible.
During your initial session, the career counselor will ask "intake questions" to learn
about you, discuss your needs, concerns and goals, determine which career assessments
you should complete, and help you develop a career plan. At that time, you also will
schedule your follow-up appointment to review the results of the assessments and determine
your next steps in the career planning process. Appointments are individualized to
fit your needs.
First, determine your goals for meeting with a career counselor. What do you hope
to achieve? Do you need help to decide on a major? Want to learn about career fields?
You may have several goals in mind, so be sure to share them with your career counselor.
If you have specific questions, make a list of them and bring it with you.
Second, bring something to take notes with. Especially during follow-up appointments,
career counselors typically provide a great amount of advice and resources, so if
you don't note this information, you may not remember all of it.
