What Employers Want from International Students

Employers want the same thing from the international student applicants as they do from the applicants from the US:

• Communication skills
• Relevant work experience

• Initiative

• Leadership ability

• Teamwork skills

• Genuine interest in their company

• and….Something that sets you apart from the rest of the applicants

Employers will always be wondering why they should hire you instead of the other applicants, so it is up to the applicant to show them what it is that makes you special. If English is not your first language, it is essential that you practice as much as you can while you are in school in order to make yourself more marketable in the US. There are many ways to practice at MSU including participating in class discussions, joining groups on campus, and attending English Corner.

Acquiring relevant experience while in school can greatly increase the likelihood of being hired upon graduation.All students are encouraged to take advantage of service learning opportunities, volunteer work, internships (CPT), and leadership positions within student organizations.

Many employers have not had experience with the hiring practices of international students. The student will need to be as informed as possible so that he/she can educate the employer on the laws and policies.Remember…it is the student’s responsibility to abide by the regulations of his/her visa.
